Imperial Beach Pier Murals

December 2020 • Imperial Beach, CA

We’ve been lucky to partner with the Port of San Diego on multiple mural projects, but being selected to help revitalize the Imperial Beach Pier was especially exciting. Located in the South Bay region of San Diego, Imperial Beach is known for its surf culture, coastal views, and laid-back community — making it the perfect setting for a large-scale public mural project.

As a San Diego mural artist team, the opportunity to create murals directly on the water was an easy yes. The goal of this project was to bring new life to the pier through a cohesive series of murals and signage that enhance the visitor experience while celebrating the identity of Imperial Beach.

The design process was extensive, involving multiple rounds of revisions to develop a concept that would span the full 1,491 feet of the pier. Our approach focused on key areas including the lifeguard tower, restrooms, and the exterior of the Tin Fish restaurant located at the very end of the pier. Each mural was designed to feel connected while still offering unique moments of visual interest along the walkway.

Drawing inspiration from the rich surf history of Imperial Beach, we used a vintage-inspired color palette paired with imagery like surfboards and iconic coastal silhouettes. These elements help tell a story rooted in local culture while keeping the overall design clean, approachable, and visually engaging for visitors.

One of the standout features of the project is the large-scale mural on the side of the Tin Fish restaurant, which includes the geographic coordinates of the pier. As the most southwesterly point of the continental United States, this location has become a popular photo opportunity and a memorable visual landmark for both locals and tourists.

Projects like this highlight the impact that public art and custom murals can have on community spaces. By combining thoughtful design with a strong sense of place, murals can transform everyday environments into destinations.

As mural artists in San Diego, we specialize in creating custom murals for public spaces, commercial properties, and coastal environments throughout San Diego County, including the South Bay. If you're looking to bring a large-scale mural project to life, we work closely with cities, organizations, and businesses to create meaningful, site-specific artwork.
