How Long Does It Take to Paint a Mural? (And What to Expect When You Hire Pandr Design Co.)

One of the first questions I get from business owners is:
“How long will the mural take?”

Totally fair question. You’re running a business, and the idea of someone painting on your walls for days (or weeks) can feel disruptive if you don’t know what to expect.

The short answer:
Most murals take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, depending on the size, surface, and conditions.

The better answer? Let’s break it down so you know exactly what to expect when working with Pandr Design Co.

How Long Will a Mural Be Installed in Your Space?

We design our process to be as efficient and non-disruptive as possible.

In general:

  • 100 sq ft mural: ~1–2 days

  • 300–500 sq ft mural: ~3–5 days

  • 1,000+ sq ft mural: ~1–2+ weeks (with a team)

We rarely paint alone. Larger walls = more assistants = faster turnaround. Our goal is simple: get in, create something amazing, and get out of your way!

Will a Mural Interrupt Your Business?

This is where things get flexible (and actually kind of fun).

Option 1: We Work Around Your Schedule

If you’d prefer zero disruption:

  • We can paint after hours

  • Nights and weekends are totally doable

  • Ideal for offices, clinics, or quieter environments

Option 2: Turn It Into a Marketing Moment

Some businesses want us there during open hours. Why? Because watching a mural come to life is:

  • Eye-catching

  • Shareable on social media

  • A reason for customers to stop by

This works especially well for:

  • Breweries

  • Shopping centers

  • Retail spaces

  • Restaurants

We’ve had clients promote the mural in progress and literally drive foot traffic from it.

What Factors Affect How Long a Mural Takes?

Not all walls are created equal. Here are the biggest variables:

1. Interior vs. Exterior Murals

Interior murals = predictable timeline
No weather, no delays, smooth process.

Exterior murals = weather-dependent

  • Rain can pause progress

  • Wind can make lifts unsafe

  • Extreme heat (hello Arizona in July) can slow things down

We always plan for this, but it’s something to keep in mind when scheduling.

2. Wall Texture (This One Matters More Than You Think)

Surface texture can dramatically impact timing.

Faster surfaces:

  • Smooth drywall

  • Primed walls

  • Flat panels

Slower surfaces:

  • Stucco

  • Corrugated metal

  • Wood slats

  • Brick

These require: More paint, more precision, and more time per square foot. At Pandr, we design with the surface in mind. Highly textured walls get simpler, bolder designs so they stay readable and don’t drag out installation time.

3. Access to the Wall

How we physically reach the wall changes everything.

Easy access (fastest):

  • Ground-level walls

  • Open space for multiple painters

More complex access (slower):

  • Walls above street level

  • Tight spaces

  • Lift or scaffolding required

When lifts are involved, the setup takes time. Fewer people can paint at once and our movement is slower. It’s totally doable but we just need to be a bit more strategic.

4. Size of the Mural

Pretty straightforward:

  • Bigger wall = more time

  • But also = more painters

We scale our team based on your project so timelines stay efficient.

Real project timing examples

^ 253 sqft, stucco, exterior wall, 3 painters = 3 days to complete

^ 99 sqft, smooth plaster, exterior wall, 2 painters = 2 days to complete

^ 2,640 sqft, drywall, interior wall, 3 painters = 3.5 days to complete

^ 75 sqft, drywall, interior wall, 1 painter = 1 day to complete

Our Goal: Be Efficient, Professional, and Respect Your Space

We know you’re not just hiring an artist…you’re trusting someone to work inside your business.

That’s why we:

  • Keep a clean, organized workspace

  • Work efficiently with a team

  • Communicate timelines clearly

  • Adapt to your schedule whenever possible

At the end of the day, we want the process to feel just as good as the final mural looks.

Thinking About a Mural for Your Space?

If you’re wondering how long your specific mural would take, we can put together an estimate for you!

All we need:

  • Photos of the wall

  • Rough dimensions

  • Your ideal timeline for the install

  • Inspiration or concept ideas you may have!

From there, we’ll map out timeline and pricing options so you know exactly what to expect.
